Google’s John Mueller: WordPress Not Naturally Better For SEO

Posted by

In response to a thread on Reddit, Google Browse Advocate John Mueller states there’s no inherent SEO advantage to utilizing WordPress compared to coding a website yourself.

A thread in the r/SEO forum asks a familiar concern lots of specialists run into in their professions.

Is WordPress much better for SEO than coding your own website?

Other variations of that question include, “is WordPress much better for SEO than Wix,” or, “is WordPress much better for SEO than [insert CMS here]”

No matter how you ask it, the answer is always the same.

WordPress isn’t inherently better for SEO than any other choice. It’s one of numerous methods to develop a site that ranks in Google.

Mueller On WordPress For SEO

In reaction to whether utilizing WordPress is better for SEO than coding your own site, Mueller states:

“Not for SEO, but you can focus more on the content if you do not invest all your time developing a brand-new CMS for yourself. (some individuals choose making a CMS, so YMMV).”

As Mueller states, the most significant advantage WordPress provides is the ease of usage compared to manually writing code.

However, that’s only useful to the site owner. It makes no distinction to Google if a site is constructed with WordPress.

This concern turns up regularly and is worth revisiting due to the misinformation distributing around WordPress and SEO.

For example, take the second-most upvoted comment in the Reddit thread straight beneath Mueller’s.

A specific claims, “Google understands WordPress well,” as though Googlebot can crawl WordPress websites more effectively than other CMSs.

That’s false, though the myth of WordPress being better for SEO continues to persist.
